The Powerhouse Castle Hill is home to the existing Museums Discovery Centre. The expansion of Powerhouse Castle Hill site will allow the whole Powerhouse collection to be stored on one site when not on display or loan, greatly improving community access to the collection.
The expansion of the Powerhouse Castle Hill is part of a wider NSW Government commitment to expand and improve the Powerhouse offering across Sydney.
New purpose-built facilities will be designed to provide space for new state-of-the-art labs, workshops and facilities to support conservation and collections management.
The Powerhouse Castle Hill site is located at 172 Showground Rd, Castle Hill. As part of the expansion, the Castle Hill site will be extended into the adjacent property currently owned by TAFE NSW. A small amount of the existing TAFE land will be transferred to enable this development. A Planning Proposal has been assessed by Department of Planning, Industry and Environment for a ‘Gateway Determination to rezone the TAFE land. Now determined, the Planning Proposal will be considered by Hills Shire Council, prior to being placed on Public Exhibition.
The Powerhouse and Create NSW have submitted a Scoping Report to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to outline the proposed expansion plans, the anticipated environmental impacts and to request Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) for the project.
The SEARs will outline the technical study and stakeholder and community engagement requirements prior to the submission of a State Significant Development Application for the expansion. Once SEARs are received the project team will confirm its stakeholder and community consultation approach, which is anticipated to commence in the next few months.
