The expansion of the Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill will allow the whole Powerhouse Collection to be stored on one site when not on display or loan, greatly improving community access to the Collection. This is part of the broader program to renew and transform the Powerhouse, one of Australia’s most significant cultural institutions.
A new state-of-the-art building will be constructed on the site, and will include spaces for the storage, care, research and viewing of the Powerhouse Collection, as well as flexible spaces for education and public programs, workshops, talks and events.
The expansion will increase opportunities for storytelling, skill-sharing, education programs, tours, events, partnerships and temporary exhibitions, and provide greater access to the Powerhouse Collection for the people of Castle Hill and broader Sydney community.
The Museums Discovery Centre is located at 172 Showground Road Castle Hill. As part of the expansion, a new building will be constructed on the adjacent TAFE site along the eastern boundary of the existing Museums Discovery Centre site. The land will be transferred to Powerhouse from TAFE NSW.
The Powerhouse Museum and Create NSW have been progressing a planning proposal to rezone the site for the Museums Discovery Centre expansion. This proposal will be placed on public exhibition by The Hills Shire Council and closed on 17 July 2020. This planning proposal is expected to be determined by end 2020.
The Powerhouse and Create NSW are developing a state significant development application for the construction and operation of the new building for Museums Discovery Centre. A request for Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) has been lodged with the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. The state significant development application including an environmental impact statement and technical reports will be developed by Powerhouse and Create NSW to address the SEARs. Once lodged, this application will be placed on public exhibition which is expected to occur in Quarter 3 2020.
